Every year 30 to 40 percent of Northcoast Doberman Rescue's dogs end up being heartworm positive.  These dogs go through a rigorous treatment and recovery program for 2-6 months depending on the severity of the disease.  Treatment is not only expensive it is very hard and exhausting on the dog and leaves them with a long road of recovery.  Unfortunately treatment does not come soon enough for some dogs and  HW disease continues to take the life of many dogs every year....BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY....Every year a dog should have a heartworm test and then be kept on heartworm preventative year round which involves giving one pill once a month.  Unfortunately, many people choose not to do the monthly heartworm preventative which would just be a couple dollars a month and sadly for some it costs them their life! 

NCDR rescues as many heartworm positive dogs as we can and no matter what every dog that comes into the rescue gets a heartworm test immediately.  A test is just $30 and then the monthly preventative is a few dollars a month.  Due to the staggering increase in heartworm positive dogs recently we hope that the "sponsor a heartworm test" will raise some awareness about how serious heartworm disease can be and why it is so very important for dogs to be on monthly HW preventative. 

If you sponsor a HW test we will send you a letter from your sponsored dog with pictures of them as they rmake this journey through rescue waiting for that one furever home that will be their last.  You will also receive the results from the HW test.  You will continue to receive updates on the dog while in rescue and until they find their Furever Home!  Sponsor a HW test and follow the journey of one of these brave rescue dogs from when they arrive at NCDR and as they wait for that home that they all deserve, where they will be loved unconditionally forever!

It has been a long long road for these 2 boys but they are finally healthy and have put on quite a few pounds (which we can say were definately needed) and they are now ready to find the perfect family.  When Colt and Buckeye first arrived they were emaciated, infested with fleas, and Buckeye had very little hair!  They couldn't wag their nubbies fast enough whenever they would eat....it was truly heartbreaking!!  But today these boys are healthy and very thankful for NCDR.  Without rescue there is a very good chance they may not be here today based on their condition 6 weeks ago.  But that is the past and they are here today looking ahead and can not wait to find their forever family and you better believe that neither of them will ever let their forever family forget how grateful they are and how much they love you!

Bella's owners didn't want her anymore so they just let her run loose on the streets!  It wasn't until she was starving and trying to eat a cat that the dog warden was able to catch her.  She was very scared at first but has now realized being with NCDR is fun and she is loved and gets to enjoy life each and every day!

A victim of getting to big and having to much energy miss Sophie really did not do anything wrong to end up at the pound.  When her family got an 8 week old doberman puppy they clearly were not deserving of this sweet girl.  At just 8 months she found herself homeless until NCDR stepped in and brought her into our rescue!
